Permafrost, a business unit of ICEMA Group, has recently completed a customized rear-loading display cold room project.

The cold room measures 10.97 × 2.44 × 2.74 m and is designed to operate at approximately 0°C, mainly for the refrigerated display and storage of beverages, desserts and other chilled products. Based on the actual operating method, the project uses a rear-loading layout with front-facing display, rear replenishment and internal refrigerated storage.

The project reflects an important part of Permafrost’s cold room approach: understand how the space will actually be used first, then determine the most suitable cold room type and configuration.

Selecting the Cold Room Type Based on Actual Requirements

Different projects require different cold room solutions.

Before a solution is confirmed, it is important to understand what products will be stored, the target temperature, available site dimensions, how goods will move in and out, whether product display is required, and the local electrical and installation conditions.

These factors directly affect the choice of cold room type.

Standard cold rooms may be suitable for general refrigerated storage. Display cold rooms can be selected for retail applications that require front-facing merchandising and rear replenishment. Container cold rooms may be considered where site, transportation or installation conditions require a modular solution, while solar cold rooms can be evaluated for projects with limited grid access or specific renewable-energy requirements.

If you have not yet decided which type of cold room is suitable for your project, you can first provide these basic requirements. Permafrost can then evaluate the application and recommend an appropriate cold room type before moving on to the detailed configuration.

Matching Refrigeration and Insulation After the Cold Room Type Is Confirmed

Once the cold room type is selected, target temperature, storage volume, stored products and ambient conditions further determine the insulation structure and refrigeration equipment.

For this project, the target temperature is approximately 0°C. The enclosure uses 100 mm polyurethane insulation panels with 0.5 mm color-coated steel on both sides.

The refrigeration system includes a 5 HP Emerson hermetic medium-temperature compressor and a DD-65 ceiling-mounted air cooler, using an R404A refrigeration system. The electrical configuration is three-phase 220V, 60Hz.

For other projects, Permafrost can match insulation thickness, compressor selection, air cooler capacity and electrical specifications according to target temperature, cold room dimensions, ambient conditions, door-opening frequency and stored products.

Local voltage, frequency and installation conditions can also be considered during the solution stage.

Adjusting the Layout Around Actual Operation

A cold room solution needs to consider not only temperature, but also how the space will be used after installation.

Retail display projects may focus more on the connection between product presentation, rear replenishment and inventory management, while warehouse projects may require greater attention to shelving, pallet dimensions, handling equipment, product flow and internal access.

Permafrost can adjust door positions, internal space, display areas, shelving and related components according to different operating requirements.

If your project has specific space limitations, product movement or operating methods, these requirements can also be discussed during the solution stage. This allows both the cold room configuration and the future operating process to be considered before production begins.

From Solution Confirmation to Production and Testing

Once the cold room type and configuration are confirmed, Permafrost arranges the production and preparation of the insulation system, refrigeration equipment, electrical configuration and related components according to the final solution.

For customized cold room projects, the production stage is not only about manufacturing individual equipment. It also requires the cold room dimensions, insulation structure, refrigeration unit and electrical specifications to remain consistent with the previously confirmed project requirements.

After production is completed, Permafrost carries out the required testing on key refrigeration equipment, including checks of unit operation and relevant electrical components, to prepare the equipment for subsequent installation and use.

Production for this project has now been completed, and the refrigeration unit has also completed its factory operating test.

From solution confirmation and equipment production to testing and inspection, Permafrost manages the project around the confirmed operating requirements so that the final cold room structure and refrigeration configuration remain aligned with the intended application.

Permafrost Helps Customers Find a More Suitable Cold Room Solution

This display cold room project is one example of how Permafrost matches cold room solutions to actual operating requirements.

Looking ahead, Permafrost will continue to develop standard cold rooms, display cold rooms, container cold rooms, solar cold rooms and other solutions for different markets and applications, supporting commercial retail, food storage, cold chain warehousing and other refrigeration projects.

With experience from a growing range of projects, Permafrost will continue to refine cold room selection, configuration matching and customized solutions, helping make each system better aligned with its actual application.
